Obituary of Vivian N. Gernert

Vivian N. (Beldring) Gernert died Monday, September 4, 2017, at Francis E. Parker Memorial Home in Piscataway. She was 98. She was born and raised in South River and lived in the same house overlooking the Raritan River in Edison for 65 years. She had been at Parker at Stonegate in Highland Park and the Parker Memorial Home in Piscataway since 2007. She was employed by Raritan Arsenal during World War II and worked in several insurance offices in later years. Mrs. Gernert was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Edison. She was an active member of the Raritan River Boat Club Auxiliary and the Edison Senior Citizens for many years. In her earlier days she had been active as a Girl Scout leader. She was proud of her Danish heritage. She visited Denmark, where her father was born and her grandfather was a ship captain and lighthouse keeper. She took great pride in her arts and crafts and was known for her beautifully decorated Christmas trees which were covered with unique ornaments which she had made. Her husband John W. Gernert died in 1974; her son John M. Gernert died in 1990; and her grandson John E. Gernert died in 2010. She was also predeceased by her parents – Frederick A. and Anna M. (Deppe) Beldring; her sisters – Anna Johnson and Aletha Frazer; and her brother Frederick J. Beldring. Surviving are a grandson Russell E. Gernert and his wife Judy of Somerset; great grandchildren – Russell, Cheyenne and Dakota Gernert; and several nieces and nephews. Cremation was private. A gathering of friends and family will be held Sunday, September 17, 2017, from 2 PM to 4 PM at Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick.
