Obituary of Mario M Garthe

Mario M. Garthe Sr., 94 passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Arista Care of Whiting, NJ.

Born in New Brunswick, NJ, Mario was raised in Highland Park and graduated from Highland Park High School and joined the US Navy serving in WWII from 1943 to 1946 as a Radioman 3rd Class on the USS Newberry. After the war, he married Irene (Warwick) Garthe in 1949 and settled in Milltown, NJ.

Mario worked for Squibb in North Brunswick and then became the vice president of traffic and sales for the Herman Forwarding Company, North Brunswick. Mario was also the owner of the Old Towne Liquor Store, Plainfield, a member of the Jersey Coast Traffic Club, the Raritan Traffic Club Bowling League, North Brunswick, the Delta Nu Alpha Traffic Fraternity and a parishioner of Saint Mary of the Mount Virgin RC Church, New Brunswick.

Mario is predeceased by his wife Irene (Warwick) Garthe, his parents Louis and Mary (Mangino) Garthe, his brothers Joseph Garthe Sr. and William Garthe, his sister Rita Garthe and his son John Garthe. He is survived by his son Mario M. Garthe Jr. and his partner Tom Koch of Dayton; his granddaughter Cassandra Chambeau and her husband Todd of Whiting; his brother Louis R. Garthe and his wife Margaret of Normandy Beach, NJ.  Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Monday May 15, 2017 from 6 to 9PM at the Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick. Funeral services will be 9:45 AM Tuesday followed by a 10:30 AM Mass at Saint Mary of the Mount Virgin RC Church, New Brunswick. Interment follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Piscataway.  In lieu of flowers, as an expression of thanks, the Garthe Family has set up a fundraiser to thank all of the caregivers who have lovingly cared for Mario these last few months. https://www.youcaring.com/MARIOGARTHESR
