Obituary of Mary C Kirkis

Mary C. (Neragias) Kirkis died Friday, February 9, 2018, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. She was 92. Born in Paterson, she was raised in Jersey City and returned to Paterson before moving to Highland Park in 1949. She was an office supervisor for Middlesex County Division of Youth and Family Services in New Brunswick for 25 years before retiring in 1986. Mrs. Kirkis was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Piscataway and belonged to the church's Daughters of Penelope. She was a member of the Highland Park Senior Club. Mary was proud of her Greek Heritage. She had a great passion and love for Greek music and dance and was a fantastic Greek dancer. She enjoyed outings with family and friends, had a quick wit and loved a challenge. She was predeceased by her husband James G. Kirkis in 1995; her brother Steven Neragias; and her sister Viola Petsis. Surviving are her daughter Harriet K. Yelo and her husband Sam of South Brunswick; her son Dean J. Kirkis of Highland Park; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 9:00 AM Tuesday from Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick followed by a 10:00 AM service at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Piscataway. Burial will follow in Van Liew Cemetery in North Brunswick. Friends and relatives may call Monday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 2151, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 3815-1942.
