Obituary of Johanna E Smith

Johanna E. (Van Liew) Smith died Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Community Medical Center in Toms River surrounded by her loving family. She was 80.

 

Born in New Brunswick to the late George and Johanna (Elbert) Van Liew she lived in East Brunswick before moving to Island Heights over five years ago. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

 

Johanna was a communicant of St. Bartholomew's R.C. Church in East Brunswick. She was a founding member and past president of the church's Altar Rosary Society. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Huddy Chapter in Toms River, the board of directors of the Island Heights Cultural Heritage Society and the Red Hat Society.

 

She was predeceased by her husband Dr. William G. Smith in 1998; siblings – Agnes Czarnecki, Ruth Albert, Madeline Vas, Myra Wnorowski and John and George Van Liew. Surviving are her children and their spouses – Johanna and Patrick DeAngelo of East Brunswick, Linda and Michael Szewczyk of South River, Christine and Tom Raabe of Brick, Elizabeth Smith of New Brunswick, Andrea and Michael Carone of Milltown, Constance and Theodore Tsikis of Rhodes, Greece, William and Tami Smith of the Highlands and Theresa and Christian Gjertsen of Atlantic Highlands; 20 grandchildren – Johanna & Kevin Corter, Amanda DeAngelo, Matthew & Alesandra Kolb, Andrew & Amanda Kolb, Zachary Kolb, Abigail Kolb, Roselle Raabe, Jacob Raabe, Avarie Carone, Lillian Carone, Willow Carone, Nathaniel Carone, Roman Carone, Leo Carone, Dr. Savas Tsikis, MD, Mikxalis Tsikis, Vasilis Tsikis, Leftheris Tsikis, Blakely Smith and Fiona Gjertsen; four great grandchildren- William, Johanna, Keagan and Wyatt; many loving nieces and nephews and countless friends.

 

Funeral services will be 9:00 AM Tuesday from Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick followed by a 10:00 AM Mass at St. Bartholomew's Church in East Brunswick. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Burial Park in South Brunswick. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home Monday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM.
