Obituary of Stephen Szmuriga

Stephen Szmuriga died Friday, March 12, 2021, at PowerBack Rehabilitation in Piscataway. He was 83. Born in New Brunswick to the late Steven and Anna (Spisak) Szmuriga, he lived in the city before moving to Highland Park in 1966. He was a 1955 graduate of St. Peter's High School in New Brunswick, received his bachelor degree from Rutgers University in 1967 and earned his M.B.A. from Seton Hall University in 1973. He was an IT auditor for Warner-Lambert (now Pfizer) in Morris Plains for 30 years before his retirement in 2000. Mr. Szmuriga was a communicant of St. Paul the Apostle R.C. Church in Highland Park. He was a member of the Rutgers Alumni and the American Iris Society. He served in the United States Army in the early 1960s. His wife of 55 years, Nancy Jeanne (Wolff) Szmuriga, died in 2019. Surviving are four daughters – Cheryl Lamb and her husband Glen of Verona, Lisa Szmuriga and her husband Louis Dima of Somerset, Adrienne Szmuriga-Winfield and her husband John Winfield of Loveland, Ohio and Stephanie Szmuriga Richard and her husband Don Richard of Graham, North Carolina; his brother Arthur Szmuriga and his wife Patti of Matthews, North Carolina; two sisters – Olga Vinchur of Piscataway and Anna Palfey and Joe Bielak of South River; his sister-in-law Carol Jegou and her husband Charlie of Milltown; and six grandchildren – Chloe, Gillian and Dallas Lamb, Alex and Anya Winfield and Jackson Richard. Cremation was private. A gathering of friends and relatives will be 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday at Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick. A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM Friday at Selover Funeral Home followed by burial of the cremated remains in Van Liew Cemetery in North Brunswick. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Transfiguration of the Lord Parish, St. Paul the Apostle Church, 502 Raritan Avenue, Highland Park, NJ 08904 or to Rutgers University at support.rutgers.edu.
