I am so sorry for your loss, I just found out Mr. Bernhardt passed so I apologize for the lateness. I am currently in my 9th year teaching middle school history and this man was the reason I pursued this career. Having him as a teacher as well as seeing his reenactments multiple times will always have a lasting impact on me, he is greatly missed.

To the Benhardt Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I was one of Don's first girlfriends; we met in church before his senior year at St Joe's. He asked me to the senior prom which was a real highlight of my high school career. Don's parents gave him a car for his high school graduation and he loved that vehicle. I remember a graduation photo where he was standing in the driveway and realized that there was a brand new car sitting there. The bewilderment followed by joy on on his face!
He loved driving to the Jersey Shore and to dances at St Joe's - I think we attended every one during the time we dated.
His mom relied on him very heavily as his dad was gone a lot and she was lonely. He was very kind and patient with her, and those qualities must have helped him in his career as a teacher.
Sincerely,
Joanna Martinez

Adele and family. So sorry to hear of Don's passing. We have so many great memories of all of you during our time at Civil War events. He was such a gentlemen and will be missed. He was always so much fun to talk to and be around. Please know that Don, Victoria and I are thinking of all of you at this time. His portraying of his character was always right on. We still have the teddy bear he made for Victoria and it is such a fond memory of when he gave it to her. The only time he was a Billy Yank. We loved being with him and the stories at events we could share around the camp fire. Rest in peace my friend. Know we will miss you.

Since coming to JP Stevens in 1996, I have had the honor of working with Don. He was always friendly, knowledgeable and in for a good discussion. He was a great colleague, but more importantly, he was a great friend. Adele, Don and Jason and family, please accept my most sincere condolences on this unbelieveable loss.
