Obituary of John O. Butler

John O. "Jack" Butler died Monday, March 6, 2023, at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was 95.

Born in Milltown to the late John and Adelaide (Sohl) Butler, he lived in the Deans section of South Brunswick since 1953. He was an operating engineer for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #825 in Newark for 40 years before his retirement in 1987.

Mr. Butler served in the United States Army's 760th Military Police Battalion at the Panama Canal during World War II. He was a member of the South Brunswick Senior Center.

Jack was an avid sportsman who, in his younger years, loved hunting, fishing and trapping. He was renowned for his vegetable gardens and his fondness for the outdoors. Mr. Butler was also a long-term cancer survivor having survived the disease for more than 30 years.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anna (Brechka) Butler, in 2008; and by his sister Vivian Selover. Surviving are two sons – Bryan Butler and his partner Gregg Clifton of New York City and Thomas Butler and his husband Robert Rybski of Sherman, Connecticut.

Private cremation was under the direction of Selover Funeral Home, North Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
