Obituary of Joseph J. Nita

Joseph J. Nita died Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at his home in Monroe Township. He was 85.

Born in New Brunswick to the late Joseph A. and Helen (Perlowski) Nita, he grew up in South River before residing in North Brunswick for 46 years then moving to Estero, Florida and Monroe Township. He received his bachelor's degree from St. Joseph University in Philadelphia and his master's from the College of New Jersey. He was the owner of Joseph J. Nita Insurance Agency, Inc. in North Brunswick for 35 years before retiring in 2003. Prior to becoming a State Farm agent he taught and coached football and basketball at Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville and Sayreville High School. He was also a professional musician who had played in several area bands.

Mr. Nita was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace R.C. Church in North Brunswick where he was a Eucharistic minister. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Light R.C. Church in Estero. He was charter Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Council #11378 in North Brunswick and was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus Assembly #664.

Joseph was active in the North Brunswick community as a Councilman, member of the Zoning Board and served as a Middlesex County Tax Commissioner. He also coached Pop Warner Football and Little League Baseball. An avid golfer, hunter and fisherman, he also had his small aircraft license.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Nancy (Baumann) Nita; his son Michael J. Nita and his wife Lyn of Annandale; his daughter Ellen Nita of Monmouth Junction; two grandchildren – Tess Boyler and Jackson Boyler; his brother-in-law Alfred Baumann and his wife Georgia of South River; and his sisters-in-law – Ann Baumann and Phyllis Baumann, both of Sayreville.

Visitation will be 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM Sunday, July 23, 2023, at Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick. Funeral services will be 9:45 AM Monday, July 24, 2023, from Selover Funeral Home followed by a 10:30 AM Mass at Our Lady of Peace Church in North Brunswick. Private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council #11378, 1730 US 130 North, North Brunswick, NJ 08902.
