Obituary of James J. Grieco

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James (Vincent) John Grieco died Monday, September 18, 2023, at his daughter and son-in-law's home in the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. He was 98 years old. Born in North Brunswick, he lived there for 95 years before moving to Monmouth Junction three years ago. After graduating from Middlesex County Vocational School in 1943, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served in World War II as a Private First Class based at Fort Monmouth, Guam and Hawaii. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and received an Asiatic-Pacific Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, and Marksmanship Badge. He was a factory worker for The Triangle Cable Company in New Brunswick prior to being promoted to the Payroll and Benefits Department. After the company closed, he worked for the North Brunswick Water Department as a meter reader for 12 years, making many new friends as he walked the neighborhoods, finally retiring at 70 years old. Mr. Grieco was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace R.C. Church in North Brunswick and a member of the church's Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Adams Athletic Club, North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Company #3, "Meals on Wheels" North Brunswick, North Brunswick Senior Pioneers Club and the VFW Post # 3117 in Edison. Throughout his life he could be found all around North Brunswick, either at Sabella Park Snack Shack on Sundays during Pop Warner games, or at his second home, the Adams AC. He loved to call bingo on Friday nights at Our Lady of Peace Church and loved tending to his beautiful vegetable garden while spending Sundays with his family enjoying spaghetti and meatballs. Whenever there was a party you could find him doing the Jitter-Bug or Polka on the dance floor, and always saving the first and last dance for his wife. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (DiGiovanni) Grieco in 2016, whom he was married to for 59 years; his son Anthony J. Grieco in 1995; his parents Antonio and Maria Caroline (Rivellese) Grieco; his brother Salvatore; and his sisters Rose Pietrafesa, Mary Bongiovi and Anne DiGiovanni. He is survived by his daughter Lisa M. Rodgers and her husband Robert of Monmouth Junction; grandchildren – Jessica Rodgers and John Rodgers; his daughter-in-law Judith (Triano) Symonds and her husband Daniel and their children Jaimee and Danny of Newark, Delaware; his brother Frank Grieco of North Brunswick; 12 nieces and nephews, 24 great nieces and nephews and 20 great-great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, September 22, 2023, at Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick. Funeral services will be 9:15 AM Saturday, September 23, 2023, from Selover Funeral Home followed by a 10:00 AM Mass at Our Lady of Peace Church in North Brunswick. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Burial Park in South Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
