Obituary of Joseph Anthony Bonomo

Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joseph Anthony Bonomo, aged 91, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2024, surrounded by family. He was born in Keansburg, NJ, to Frank and Mary (Nazzaro) Bonomo and grew up in North Arlington before settling in Edison, where he made his home for over six decades.

After high school Joe attended Fairleigh Dickinson College and received a bachelor’s degree. After completing basic training in the US Army, he came home to marry his high school sweetheart, beginning a partnership that endured for 69 years. After their wedding they both went to Munich, Germany for 16 months so Joe could finish his Army service. They had the time of their lives traveling all over Europe on his leaves.

Joe's professional journey unfolded in the realm of criminal justice, starting with a role in the State Parole Department in Elizabeth, NJ for 4 years. He then got a job with Middlesex County Probation where he stayed for over 30 years working in various departments, the last 15 years as Assistant Chief.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Joe’s passions were multiple. He was an accomplished fisherman. His love for nurturing life extended beyond the waters as he tended to his gardens, growing many varieties of vegetables and flowers. He was an avid NY Yankees fan, he adored his cats, and the Jersey Shore held a special place in his heart.

He is preceded in death by his brothers Chester, Nino, Patrick, and Frank, as well as his sisters Millie Roth and Mary Nanna. Joe is survived by his wife Lucy, daughters, Lisa Levy of Port St. Lucie, FL, and Lauren Aretakis and her husband Steve of North Brunswick, NJ, along with his cherished grandchildren, Stephanie and Teddy Aretakis.

Due to renovations, services will be held at Gleason Funeral Home 1360 Hamilton Street in Somerset.
