Joan Marino Bornheimer , 80, of East Brunswick, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the Cranbury Care Center in Monroe, surrounded by her family. Born and raised in New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Thomas G. and Carmela Bruno Marino and the wife of the late William E. Bornheimer, Jr. She was also predeceased by her brother Joseph G. Marino and her sister Caroline M. Gotelli. Joan was a product of the New Brunswick school system and proudly served that school district for 54 years. She received her undergraduate degree from Douglass College, her Masters Degree from Seton Hall University and did her post graduate work at Rutgers University. In the 54 years that Joan worked for the school district she served in many capacities. She was a teacher, Dept. Head for Student Affairs, Administrative Assistant to the Principal, the first female principal of New Brunswick High School, summer school principal, and at the time of her retirement, the Director of Bilingual/English as a Second Language, Library and World Languages. She was actively involved as chairperson, treasurer, trustee or member of many educational and professional organizations throughout the New Brunswick School District and community. She received countless honors for her hard work and dedication to the education of the students of New Brunswick. She is survived by her daughter Karen Lukenda and her husband Mark, three beloved grandchildren - Michael, Shane and Kaylin and three nieces - Carole DeLuca, Gail Meiering and Marianne Lorenze and their families. Funeral services will be 8:15 AM Saturday from Selover Funeral Home, 555 Georges Road, North Brunswick, followed by a 9:00 AM Mass at St. Bartholomew R.C.Church on Ryder's Lane in East Brunswick. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in New Brunswick. Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM.
