Marty’s smiling face and exuberant disposition was an appreciative welcome to begin my workday and certainly a positive representative for UBHC for all visitors from her front desk. I was personally very sorry when she left our employ.
I am very sorry for the loss to her friends and family. She will be missed.

Marty was a friend of my sister Helen, and a constant “Manasquan visitor”!
She was expected at “Hopkins Family” events and everyday gatherings for many years. Route 18 was her friend and adversary.
Her love of reading and book recommendations were a shared topic of many conversations/emails. Marty was also a beach lover and rarely missed weekends at “the Shore”. She had a terrific ability to converse and to relate very easily with the young and the old in our family. I treasure my memories of her and easiest of all, I will remember her fabulous smile.
Praying that Marty is resting in peace and is surrounded by family and friends who have gone before her.

Q: How did you meet Martha?
A: My name is Margie Jo Williamson, I’m retired military. I met Martha when I attended St. John with my friend, Susan Huslage, who is the organist there. I was preparing to deploy to Iraq and had met Martha that Sunday before being deployed. Martha wrote me often while I was deployed. It was so heartwarming to receive mail from Martha and read about what was happening back in New Brunswick, New Jersey and the Church. When I returned home, which was Kentucky. I made a trip to New Brunswick and had an open heartwarming Welcome not only from the Church, but definitely from Martha. Martha was a kind, caring and loving person. I’m honor to have met her and have had Martha a part of my life. Martha, you are now with our Heavenly Father.
SSG Margie Jo Williamson(Retired Chief Medic).

There is only silence now. Emptiness? Not really. I just feel relieved that you did not linger in pain for too long. You were able to fly away from a body that would not respond well anymore. Your soul could not inhabit a place where there was no joy of living, no joking around, no good sense of humor, and no spontaneity. I close my eyes and I can see you laughing, I can hear you talking with a Trinidadian accent in good spirits when your path crossed with someone from the islands, I can see your facial expressions when you liked or didn’t like something, I can feel your love for cats (for any animal for that matter), for your collection of elephant figures, as well as your kind and empathic attitude towards whomever was in need of your protection. At the same time, I can also hear you swearing and speaking your mind when you disapproved of something. You told it like it was, Marty, without any sugarcoating, because you were authentic! However, behind your apparent bluntness, there was an enormous heart, which cared genuinely for your fellow human being. Your address was ours here in the States for so many years while Chris and I lived out of the country. You were the one who came to Brazil, before we got married, to show my parents your brother was not alone in the world. And we had you visit almost all of the 365 churches in Bahia, to the point you were sick of it! . (LOL!). I remember when I got pregnant with my first child and we named the baby right there in the living room of your little apartment in North Brunswick, your little hole on the wall for over 50 years! My memory traveled to that moment right now and it brought a smile to my face. Oh, how I learned to love you like a real sister over the years, Marty! When I lost your brother, so suddenly, who was my first and loving husband, the father of my two children, Alister and Lew Godfrey, you became my sounding board and the one I shared everything about the children with. You and I shared a checking account, because if anything happened to me, you would handle OUR children’s affairs until they turned 18. You were a godmother to the both of them! When we decided to come back to the States in 1991, you were our point of reference, the one we counted on in good and in bad times. You came to see us everywhere we lived and took the best pictures of the kids growing up. You had a passion for photography and was very good at it too. I remember your routine for almost 40 years living in NJ and working in NY. It didn’t matter what season of the year it was, there you were Mon-Thu, waking up at the crack of dawn to be at Dr. Scheer’s office by 7 AM. Nothing short of amazing and admirable! How many people you helped him go back to hearing, right? I can’t even count. There are so many incredible and emotional stories about the miracles those hands performed! You have always adapted very well to all the changes you went through, Marty, and became a role model in self-sufficiency to me. In your third act of life, you counted on your friends to keep at it. They are commendable! I only wished I could have lived closer to make your life easier. But you were never a burden to anyone. When life gave you lemons, you made them into a savory lemonade. Five difficult years of dialysis and you drove to and from all of them. God only knows how, finding strength in your faith and in the routine you created for yourself out of pure guts!
God bless everyone who planned and participated in your surprise 80th birthday party at your mother’s Church, which became your own as well. I stop and realize that it was only three short months ago… We watched everything with a joyful heart through Alister’s camera. How incredibly wonderful that was! I believe your spirit held on strong in order to receive the tremendous shower of love and appreciation, celebrating a lifetime of reaping what you sowed, Marty! Now, let’s remember you smiling and shining as you did on that beautiful day. No sadness, no more suffering for you, no more cold blood coming into your veins through a difficult access from the dialysis machine, no more falls, no more doctors, no more surgeries, NO MORE, period! You are FREE from all that!
Just breathe in the freedom and rejoice with all your loved ones who are there on the other side of the veil to embrace you warmly with all the tenderness you deserve, Marty!
My watery eyes look at the sky and say:
WELL DONE, SIS!
We will always LOVE YOU!
Sincerely,
Sula

Such a great lady and a wonderful friend. Knowing Marty the past 30 years has been a pleasure. Will always remember the fun we've had, especially at my all girls 50th birthday party. Also, sharing stories about our beloved cats. Rest in peace.
Blessings,
Dot
